Performance Team Info

Performance Team Auditions
Monday, August 16th, 2010

Company One (K & 1st grade)            5:30 - 6:00
Company Two (2nd - 3rd grade)        6:00 - 6:45
Company Three (4th - 6th grade)      6:45 - 7:30
Company Four (7th - 8th grade)        7:30 - 8:15
Company Five (9th & up)                    8:15 - 9:00

What is it?
Performance Teams are groups that dancers audition and are selected for. Usually these are the most advanced dancers for their age. They are the groups that will represent Gravity at community performances (ie: Canyon View Christmas Craft Fair, SUU games, Drill Team Reviews, Community Events etc.). Some teams will also attend a Dance Convention in the fall and all Teams will do an additional competition in St. George in the spring.
There ARE more requirements & expenses for dancers who choose to be part of Performance Teams. Those requirements are listed in the information below.

Who can audition?
Auditions are open to anyone! You do not have to have been a Gravity student to audition. Auditions are a GREAT way to improve as a dancer! You get more exposure, experience and feedback - even if you don’t make it, you should learn a lot at each audition. Just come at the appropriate time for your age - although there is a chance you will be placed in an older or younger team, the ages are just guidelines.

Auditions:
Auditions will be held at Gravity Dance Center on Monday August 16th. We want dancers to have a positive experience, while still having a true “audition experience.”  Dancers can come 15 min early and stretch in the small studio so they are ready for auditions to start. Auditions will be in the big studio. Parents can watch from the lobby, but are NOT welcome in the studio.

Dancers will be instructed to do technique across the floor as well as taught a short jazz combination. Everything will be taught on the spot - there is nothing they need to know before auditions. There will be judges. Dancers will be judged on technique, style & performance.

What should I wear?
All auditions are different, and directors are looking for specific things. One thing I like to  see are the dancers own personalities, which is why we don’t have a specific dress code for auditions. Dancers should come “dressed to impress” in appropriate dance clothes. If you are most comfortable dancing in a leotard and tutu...wear that! If you have a sparkly top and dance shorts you love...wear that! Tradition audition attire is all black. Just remember that you have 1 chance to make an impression, so make sure it’s the one you want to make!

I think everyone looks better with a little hair and make-up, so don’t be afraid to look your best! Make us WANT to watch you!!!

Then what?
After auditions, results will be posted on the Gravity blog later that evening.

What if I don’t make it?
Don’t panic! Take what you learned and use it to improve. Everyone can’t make everything every time. It doesn’t mean you aren’t a good dancer, there are just certain things we are looking for in a competitive group. Continue taking class - maybe take a few more and try again!

business expo info…

Just a reminder that we have regular class this week and you get your studio pictures back!!!

So here is the performance order for the Business Expo (it is almost exactly the same as the recital):
1. Fabulous
2. Cheer Mix
3. Dollhouse
4. Groove Is In The Heart
5. It's All About Me
6. Rock Around The Clock
7. Wild Wild Party
8. They Don't Care
9. Popular
10. Moonwalker
11. The Boys Are Back
As you can see, there is NO TAP (to prevent shoe & costume changes) and the older girls are only doing 1 dance. I anticipate the entire performance being about 30 minutes. I don't know much about this event other than it's in the Ballroom & it's free. Sorry - next year I'll know a lot more :)
EVERYONE needs to be at the Sharwan Smith Statue in the SUU Rotunda at 6:30pm 100% ready to dance. Hair, make-up and costumes just the same as the recital.
You can leave when you are done!

Thanks for spending 2 Friday nights in a row on dance! I know it's a crazy time of year and I truly appreciate it!

upcoming events…

Just a reminder of upcoming events!!!

If you ordered tights or studio basics they will be here Wednesday! I will bring them to dress rehearsal! Tights are $10.

3rd - 5th JBT WILL have class on Thursday (May 13th) before Dress Rehearsal.
6th-8th Jazz WON'T.

SUMMER DANCE
The schedule & registration info are posted on the website!
It's first come first serve, and when the classes are full they are full.
We have some exciting things planned for summer!

RECITAL FEE'S & TUITION
Please make sure you have your recital fee's paid and your account is current! This is our last month of "regular dance" and it is important that you are caught up.
Dancer's who haven't paid will not be allowed to perform.
If you are unsure, come into the studio this week! You can check the blog for the amounts.

DRESS REHEARSAL
Thursday, May 13th
6:30-8:30PM
CEDAR HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM

Please have your dancers there, in their costumes - it's OK if their hair & makeup is not done. You did great at Competition & the Fall Recital, so I trust you :)
If you are nervous about tights ripping, you can go without or wear others, but you MUST have the correct tights for the recital!!!
Preschool & Kindergarten will go FIRST - I will try to have them done by 7:00.
The JBT classes will practice their Group Tap Dance from 6:30-7:00.
The rest of the show will run in order! Dancers can leave when they are done!
Don't forget your Studio Basics & Tap Shoes for the Tap Performance (1st & 2nd and 3rd - 5th JBT)

SPRING RECITAL
Friday, May 14th
7:00pm
CEDAR HIGH SCHOOL AUDITORIUM

FREE ADMISSION
DANCERS NEED TO ARRIVE AT 6:30PM 100% READY!!!
Costumes, hair & make-up will be just the same as they were for Studio Pictures!
I will have "helpers" backstage, so there is no need for mom's to be there! We want it to be a fun night & a positive experience with NO STRESS.
Just a reminder that one of the things we teach is Recital & Stage Etiquette. Please be respectful of the experience.

We will have regular class the week after the recital. We have some fun things planned, and well as a review for the SUU Business Expo.
You can also pick up your pictures that week!
PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't think class this week isn't important!

SUU BUSINESS EXPO
Friday, May 21st
7:00pm
SUU SHARWAN SMITH BALLROOM

Mayor Carroon is speaking at the event that night and changed his time, so it bumped us back from 6:30 to 7:00. I hope this isn't a huge problem and I apologize for the short notice!
Please meet by the Sharwan Statue in the Rotunda at 6:30 - 100% ready to dance! Costume, hair & make-up just like it was for the recital.
We will perform all the dances (except tap) from the recital, in about the same order. I'll email you the exact order that week.
You can leave when your dancer is done.
There is no cost to get in.

Again, please don't assume this performance isn't important. It is unfair to the teachers & other dancers if even 1 dancer isn't there.
If, for some reason, your dancer won't be there, please tell your teacher ASAP. However, it has been on the schedule since March 22nd, so hopefully everyone can make it!

NEXT YEAR'S SCHEDULE & REGISTRATION
I will have the info on the website in July.

recital info…

Can you believe this year is already almost over?!

I'm sorry that the summer schedule is not on the website yet. Don't stress, there will be plenty of room for your dancers :)

I am putting in 1 FINAL order for tights, shoes & studio basics before the recital! Please let me know by THURSDAY, MAY 6th if you need anything!
I have received a few e-mails, and if you have sent me one, you don't need to send it again.
HOWEVER! If you have told me in passing, or at the Competition, or at the studio and I didn't write it down, please e-mail me and let me know!
There is not another place (in town) to get these items, so check and double check that your dancers have everything they need!

If you have forgotten or are newer to the studio, as it says in the Studio Policies there IS an annual Recital Fee.
It is $25 per dancer or $40 per family. This covers the rental fee and insurance for the auditorium.
If you joined the studio AFTER the fall recital, the fee is half!
This should be paid BEFORE the Spring Recital.
Make checks payable to Gravity.
Admission is FREE and unlimited, so bring as many friends & family as you want!
I scheduled the Spring Recital on a Friday so maybe Grandparents could make it a little easier!

Just a reminder about dates:

Our Spring Recital is scheduled for Friday, May 14th at 7pm at the Cedar High School Auditorium.

Dress Rehearsal will be Thursday, May 14th at 6:30pm at Cedar High.
Dancers will perform their Competition Dances & a Tap Dance. It will be a great show!

We will have class the week after the recital (mostly a class party) and review our dances from the recital for the Business Expo Performance.

Pictures will be passed out during class this week!

We have been asked to perform at the Business Expo at SUU the following Friday, May 21st at 6:00pm. All classes will perform their dance from the recital.

More info will follow soon.

There will be no class after Friday, May 21st.

As always, I’ll post this and any other notes & info on the blog.

You're the best! Thanks.

competition results…

I am NOT posting the Gravity Photos email - that I sent this morning - on the blog (for privacy).
If you didn't receive it, or deleted it, see if another mom can get it to you ASAP!

We did it! We made it through our first competition! THANK YOU for having your dancers there, looking fabulous, on time, and with great attitudes! I hope we all agree that it was a really good day! I got so much positive feedback from parents & directors from other studios about our dancers, costumes & studio!!!

Thanks to those of you who either stayed or came back for awards :)
I'll briefly explain how this competition does their awards:
Each routine is judged against itself; in other words, you are not competing against other groups.
Each routine is given a score: Superior (1st), Excellent (2nd), or Outstanding (3rd)

Here are our results...
Tues Preschool "Popular" ~ Superior (1st)
Tues Kindergarten "All About Me" ~ Superior (1st)
Tues 1st & 2nd JBT "Rock Around the Clock" ~ Excellent (2nd)

Wed Preschool "Fabulous" ~ Superior (1st)
Wed Boys "The Boys Are Back" ~ Superior (1st)
Wed Beg Cheer "Cheer Mix" ~ Superior (1st)

Thurs 3rd - 5th JBT "Wild Wild Party" ~ Superior (1st)

We also had 3 dancers compete in the solo competition. These dancers ARE judged against other dancers and receive placings based on their scores:
Ellie Coder: Queen (1st place!)
Kassidy Allen: 2nd Attendant
Haislee Hill: 4th Attendant

I'm so proud of all of our classes & dancers! Each dancer will receive a medallion at class this week. We still will continue to practice, clean & perfect these dances for the Spring Recital as well as work on a few more things. If your dancer is in a JBT class they MUST have their tap shoes at every class!!!

Also, the summer schedule & registration info. will be on the website this week!
Fall registration info. will be posted when this dance season ends.

Thanks as always!

final parowan info…

Hey Everyone!

I am attaching the latest and FINAL Parowan Competition Schedule with this e-mail - please check & re-check to make sure you know when you need to be there.
The competition is being held at Parowan High School 128 West 100 North Parowan, UT 84761.

Pictures went really well this week! Thanks for having your dancers there and looking so cute... love them all! :)
I'll let you know when they will be done, but it will be before regular class ends in May.

Here are a few reminders:

Make sure your dancers are wearing the correct tights - there were a few in class this week who were not... the tag says Revolution.

Please DO NOT add any other hair accessories, jewelry, or additions to the costumes. If you do, I will ask the girls to remove them.

Dancers need to be in the Gravity Dressing Room 1 HOUR BEFORE their scheduled performance time. The Parowan Rammettes can show you where our dressing room is.

Please have dancers 100% ready when they arrive. We will practice their dances, stretch and make sure they are ready to perform, so please don't plan to use that hour to get them ready - we need that time with them. It is REALLY important to me that dancers don't feel stressed, rushed or "in trouble" before they perform - it should be a positive experience. It should also be an opportunity for them to learn performance etiquette and how to be professional, so let us help them have the best experience they can!

As soon as your dancer is done performing, you can leave.

If you want to stay or come back for awards we would LOVE to have you there! Each dancer will receive a little medallion, I will have them in class next week.

Thanks again for everything! You are making our 1st year a success - I have listened to your feedback, made notes of how we can improve all year, and I am SO excited for next year!

competition, costumes & photos…

Competition & Photos

Costumes are here! Well, except for the 1st-2nd Grade JBT, which are being custom made and will be here for class next week (April 20). I will have them at the studio all week and you can pay for them and pick them up! Each of the dancers were measured and the costumes were ordered accordingly, so I don’t anticipate any problems.

All costumes are $40 EXCEPT 1st & 2nd JBT, which are $32.

Also, don’t forget that your competition fee is due! It is $15 until April 15th and then goes to $20 after that.

It is MANDATORY that your dancer does not miss class between now and the end of the dance year! The recital dates are the same as I previously gave you, here is the info again...

We have been asked to perform at the Business Expo at SUU the following Friday, May 21st at 6:00pm. All classes will perform their dance from the recital.

Class Photos

Next (April 19-23) week we will have class photos. EVERY class will have their picture taken. Abbey Kyhl will be at the studio taking photos - she is great! You can see her work at http://www.akstudio.typepad.com. Here is a list of prices for Gravity picture day.
You DO NOT have to buy pictures, but if you want any you need to pay for pictures when your dancer gets to class:

OPTION A - $15.00                    OPTION B - $20
5x7 group                        8x10 group
5x7 individual                    5x7 Individual

OPTION C - $25.00
8x10 group
5x7 individual
8 wallets of individual

Make checks payable to AK Studio. We will have order forms there!
All photos will be taken during regular class time, so your dancer needs to be on time & performance ready (see below). We will do a class photo and those who choose to purchase them will have individual photos taken. Pictures need to be paid for BEFORE class, otherwise your dancer will only be in the class photo.
We will also have a “dress rehearsal” the same day during class so your dancer MUST be there!
What to Wear & Not to Wear!
Here is a list of exactly what your dancer should be wearing for both pictures & competition:

Tuesday & Wednesday Preschool: tights, costumes, pink ballet shoes, hair curly down, light make-up.

Wednesday Kindergarten: tights, costumes, pink ballet shoes, hair curly down, light make-up.

Tuesday 1st-2nd JBT: Studio Basics (cami, shorts, tights, shoes), hair pulled back in a curly pony (if it’s too short, curl it all and just pull the top back), light make-up.
(They have a 50’s style skirt and a hair-piece to tie in the pony. I will have their skirts on picture day, so send them ready and we can just add the finishing touches!)

Tuesday & Wednesday Cheer: green Gravity shirt, black shorts, white shoes, no show socks, hair pulled back in a curly pony, light make-up.

Wednesday Boys Hip Hop: cargo pants, layers (just like when you perform)

~ change the costume in any way

Competition Times & Info

I should have the schedule for the Parowan Competition by this Friday, the 16th. I will send an e-mail when I have it. I registered all of our classes as beginner, meaning this is the first time they have competed as a group.

The dancers and teachers have been working hard on their dances, and are excited to perform them! I appreciate your support and I know your dancers do too!

Thanks for everything you do! Let me know if you have any questions. I can best be reached by e-mail!
